Seb’s Childhood Swedish Meatballs

A nostalgic recipe for Swedish meatballs that combines ground beef and pork in a rich creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into small meatballs, using your hands.
  3. Brown the meatballs in a skillet with melted butter over medium heat until golden brown.
  4. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
  5. Pour in beef broth and bring to a simmer, stirring to incorporate any bits stuck to the pan.
  6. Add heavy cream and soy sauce, stirring to combine into a smooth sauce.
  7. Return the meatballs to the skillet to soak up the sauce.
  8. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Notes

Serve warm with lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes. The meatballs freeze well for future meals.
