A comforting casserole dish featuring creamy, cheesy goodness layered with tender potatoes and savory ham.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large Russet Potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups Ham (diced)
  • 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese (shredded)
  • 1 cup Gruyere Cheese (shredded)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter (for roux)
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Whole Milk
  • 1 medium Onion (chopped)
  • 2 cups Chicken Broth
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Start by washing the Russet potatoes thoroughly. Peel them and slice them thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the sautéed onions and stir to combine, allowing it to cook for an additional minute.
  4. Slowly add in the chicken broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Once combined, gradually pour in the whole milk, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and starts to thicken.
  5. Stir in the salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Then, remove from heat and mix in 2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese and 1 cup of Gruyere cheese until melted and creamy.
  6. In a buttered 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the diced ham. Pour half of the cheese sauce over this layer. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce, making sure to cover the dish well.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. After this time, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Once your casserole is out of the oven, let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
