Soft, airy, and indulgently sweet Hungarian Fried Dough that brings the carnival spirit right to your home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast, letting it sit until foamy—about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the dry ingredients: In another bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Add the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil to the flour mixture. Gently mix until combined to form a shaggy dough.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer the mixture to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Let the dough rise: Place your kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Roll and cut the dough: Once risen, roll it out on a floured surface until about 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes.
  7. Fry the dough: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and fry each piece of dough until golden brown on both sides, roughly 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Dust with sweetness: Remove the fried dough from the oil and place it on paper towels. Dust each piece with powdered sugar.
