Lebanese Knafeh

A beloved Lebanese dessert featuring layers of shredded pastry, warm cheese, and fragrant syrup, perfect for special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound kataifi pastry
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • 1 tablespoon orange blossom water
  • 1/2 cup crushed pistachios

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the kataifi pastry with the melted butter in a large bowl.
  3. Spread half of the buttered kataifi mixture into the bottom of a baking dish.
  4. Layer the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the pastry.
  5. Top with the remaining kataifi pastry, spreading it evenly over the cheese layer.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  7. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and stir over medium heat until dissolved.
  8. Remove from heat and add rose water and orange blossom water.
  9. Pour the syrup over the baked Knafeh while it’s still hot.
  10. Let it cool, then garnish with crushed pistachios before serving.

Notes

Knafeh is best served warm, ideally paired with Arabic coffee or mint tea.
