Potthucke – Traditional German Potato Cake

A heartwarming traditional German potato cake that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, featuring smoky bacon and rich onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 kg potatoes
  • 200 g smoked bacon
  • 2 onions
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Peel and grate the potatoes and onions.
  2. Mix the grated potatoes, diced bacon, grated onions, egg, flour, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Spoon the potato mixture into the pan and flatten gently.
  5. Cook the potato cakes for 10-15 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

For extra crunch, add a sprinkle of cornmeal to the mixture or increase the heat slightly while cooking.
