A heartwarming dish of creamy grits and succulent shrimp, celebrating Southern flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup grits
  • 4 cups water or chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 6 slices bacon, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the Base: In a pot, bring 4 cups of water or chicken broth to a boil. Once boiling, add in the grits. Reduce the heat and let them simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened—this usually takes about 20 minutes.
  2. Create the Creamy Canvas: Once the grits have thickened to your liking, stir in 1 cup of heavy cream and 2 tablespoons of butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and keep warm while you prepare the shrimp.
  3. Crisp the Bacon: In a skillet, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until it’s crispy. Once done, remove the bacon and set it aside, but leave those delightful drippings in the skillet because they’re packed with flavor.
  4. Sauté and Sizzle: Now, in the same skillet with the bacon drippings, sauté the minced garlic for about a minute until fragrant. Next, add in the shrimp, sprinkle with paprika, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the shrimp turns pink and curls up—usually around 3-4 minutes.
  5. Assemble and Serve: To serve, ladle the creamy grits onto plates, then top with the sautéed shrimp. Don’t forget to add the crispy bacon on top and sprinkle with chopped green onions for that fresh bite. Enjoy this hearty dish immediately, as it’s best served warm!

Notes

For an extra touch of flavor, consider adding a splash of hot sauce to the shrimp mixture. You can use quick-cooking grits to cut down the cooking time.
