Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add salt and gradually mix in the flour until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it on a baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  8. Make a few slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Use warm water to activate the yeast properly and don’t rush the rising process for the best flavor.
