Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • Dipping sauces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt until a dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  5. Bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil in a large pot.
  6. Roll the dough into ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  7. Boil the pretzel bites in batches for 30 seconds, then drain on a paper towel.
  8. Place the bites on a lined baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Ensure your water is warm to activate the yeast properly. Knead well for a chewy texture and don’t skip the boiling for the classic pretzel crust.
