Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium onions
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions by peeling each, trimming the top off, and slicing into 8 equal petals without cutting through the root end.
  2. Soak the onions in a bowl of ice water for 30 minutes to help the petals open up.
  3. Whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a shallow dish.
  4. Prepare the wet ingredients by beating the eggs with the milk in a separate bowl.
  5. Coat each onion by dredging it in the seasoned flour, dipping it into the egg mixture, and then coating it thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry the onions in batches for 4–5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. Drain the fried onions on a paper towel–lined plate to remove excess oil.
  9. Make the creamy ranch dip by whisking together the mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, dried dill, dried parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth.
  10. Serve the crispy mini bloomin’ onions hot with the creamy ranch dip on the side.

Notes

Serve with other dipping sauces like spicy ketchup or zesty BBQ sauce for added flavor.
