A simple yet delicious batter for frying fish that delivers a crispy, golden crunch, inspired by nostalgic family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cold water or beer
  • 1 pound fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl: flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Create the batter by gradually adding cold water or beer, mixing until smooth.
  3. Heat oil in a fryer or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Coat the fish fillets in the batter, ensuring they are well-coated.
  5. Fry the battered fish in hot oil until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes.
  6. Drain the fish on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, like tartar sauce or garlic aioli.

Notes

Pair the battered fish with crispy fries or a fresh salad. For added flavor, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top before serving. Best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored for up to 2 days.
