A spicy, crispy Southern fried chicken dish that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces of chicken (drumsticks or thighs)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Pickles for serving
  • White bread for serving

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken in buttermilk for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  2. Prepare the flour mixture by mixing flour, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Dredge the marinated chicken in the seasoned flour mixture.
  5. Fry the chicken until golden brown and cooked through, about 15-18 minutes.
  6. Create the spicy sauce by mixing hot sauce and brown sugar in a bowl.
  7. Brush the sauce generously on the fried chicken.
  8. Serve with pickles and slices of white bread.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-dip the chicken. Marinating longer enhances flavor and tenderness.
