Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Roll out the dough: Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  5. Cut out shapes: Cut the dough into desired shapes (often heart or oval).
  6. Prepare the coating: In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
  7. Fry the dough: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry each piece of dough until golden brown on both sides.
  8. Coat and serve: Drain on paper towels and coat with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Serve warm.
