A rich and decadent German Chocolate Cake with chocolate layers and a delightful coconut-pecan frosting.

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup sweet baking chocolate
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Pour boiling water over the sweet baking chocolate and let it stand until melted.
  3. Mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  4. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  5. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract and melted chocolate.
  6. Combine the flour mixture and buttermilk gradually, alternating between the two.
  7. Divide the batter among the prepared cake pans.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool before removing them from the pans.
  10. Frost the cake with a mixture of coconut, pecans, and your preferred frosting recipe.

Notes

Store leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days or refrigerate for about a week.
