A classic banana pudding recipe that blends creamy pudding, fresh bananas, and crispy vanilla wafers, evoking memories of family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/3 cup of cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 bananas
  • 1 box of vanilla wafers
  • Whipped cream (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk them together until they’re well incorporated for a smooth base.
  2. Cook the Mixture: Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or spatula until the mixture thickens and starts to boil.
  3. Prepare the Egg Yolks: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until they are well combined. Slowly add some of the hot mixture into the yolks to temper them.
  4. Return the Yolk Mixture: Pour the tempered yolk mixture back into the saucepan. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring continuously until it thickens even more.
  5. Add Flavor: Stir in the butter and vanilla, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  6. Layer the Ingredients: In a serving dish, start layering by placing sliced bananas and vanilla wafers at the bottom. Pour the warm pudding mixture over the top.
  7. Repeat the Layers: Repeat the layering process until you’ve used up all the ingredients, finishing with a generous pour of pudding.
  8. Chill the Pudding: Top it all off with a fluffy layer of whipped cream and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

For thicker pudding, increase cornstarch slightly. Use lemon juice on bananas to prevent browning.
