A nostalgic, chocolatey delight that brings family gatherings to life with its moist texture and luscious frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a large sheet pan by greasing and flouring it.
  2. Whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a bowl.
  3. Boil 1 cup of unsalted butter and 1 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a rolling boil.
  4. Mix the boiling butter and water mixture into your bowl of dry ingredients until fully combined.
  5. Add 1/2 cup of buttermilk, 4 large eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder to the batter and mix until smooth.
  6. Bake the batter in the prepared pan for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Frost the warm cake with a mixture of 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder, and 1/4 cup of milk that has been boiled, then stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.

Notes

For added richness, serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Wrap leftovers for up to four days at room temperature.
