A stunning and crispy appetizer that’s perfect for gatherings, the Blooming Onion is a showstopper that delights both the eyes and the palate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • Oil for frying
  • Dipping sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onion into a bloom shape by making cuts in a star pattern, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk together until fully blended.
  4. Dip the prepared onion into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then gently coat it in the flour mixture, ensuring that all the petals are nicely covered.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or pan to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully fry the onion in the hot oil for about 3–4 minutes, or until golden brown, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  7. Once cooked, use tongs to remove the onion from the oil and place it on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with a dipping sauce if desired, and watch your guests delight in this incredible creation.

Notes
